Metal Garage Sizes: Standard 1, 2 & 3 Car Dimensions, Door Heights & Prices

The right metal garage size depends on more than the vehicles you park. Door width, door height and the room you want for a workbench, storage or a second row of tools all add to the footprint. This guide covers the standard metal garage sizes for one, two and three cars, trucks and RVs, how to size the doors and leg height, and what each size costs installed.

Garage Size Guides

Each guide covers pricing, what fits, door options, slab size and permit notes for that size. New sizes are added to this list as they are published.

How Metal Garage Sizes Are Measured

A metal garage listed as 24x30x10 is 24 feet wide by 30 feet long with 10-foot legs. Three details trip up buyers:

  • Leg height is the sidewall height. It sets how tall your doors can be, and the roof peak sits several feet higher.
  • Some builders list the roof length. As with carports, a garage listed as 20x21 may have a 20-foot frame under a 21-foot roof. Ask which number the quote uses before you pour a slab.
  • Width is clear span. The full width is open inside, with no center posts, so you can lay out bays and benches any way you like.

How Wide Should A Garage Be?

Plan width around your doors as well as your vehicles. A typical car or SUV is 6 to 6.5 feet wide before mirrors, and most residential garage doors are 8 to 10 feet wide per bay. Each door also needs framing space beside it and some wall between doors.

  • One vehicle: 12 feet wide fits one car with a single door. Go to 18 or 20 feet if you want a workbench or storage wall beside it.
  • Two vehicles: 24 feet wide is the standard. It fits two 9-foot doors with framing between them, while 20 to 22 feet is tight for two doors.
  • Three vehicles: 30 feet wide fits three 8-foot single doors, or one 16-foot double door plus a 9-foot single door.

How Long Should A Garage Be?

Most sedans and SUVs run 15 to 19 feet long, and a crew-cab pickup with a 6.5-foot bed is just over 20 feet. A 20-foot garage fits most cars with little room to walk around them. Choose 24 feet for a workbench at the back, and 30 feet or more for long trucks, a mower or tool storage.

How Tall Should A Metal Garage Be?

Pick the door height first, then the legs. A common builder rule is that the leg height must be at least 1 foot taller than the garage door. For example, an 8-foot door needs 9-foot legs and a 10-foot door needs 11-foot legs. Roll-up doors also need room above the opening for the coil, often 16 to 24 inches. Certified doors in high-wind areas need more.

Door HeightTypical UseLeg Height To Plan
8 ftCars, minivans, most SUVs and stock half-ton pickups9 to 10 ft
9 ftLifted pickups, trucks with racks, small work vans10 to 11 ft
10 ftTaller vans, small travel trailers, enclosed utility trailers12 ft
12 ftFifth wheels, larger travel trailers, toy haulers14 ft
14 ftClass A motorhomes and large equipment16 ft

Measure the tallest point of your tallest vehicle, including the roof AC unit, antennas or ladder rack, and add 12 to 18 inches before you choose a door.

Doors, Windows And Framed Openings

Most metal garage prices start without doors, windows or walk-in doors, so add them to your quote. Common choices include:

  • Roll-up doors: 8x7, 9x7, 9x8 and 10x8 for cars and trucks; 10x10 and up for trailers and RVs
  • Walk-in door: A standard 36-inch door, so you are not opening the big door every time
  • Windows: For light and ventilation
  • Framed openings: A frame-out lets you install a standard residential overhead door later

Roof Style, Gauge And Certification

A vertical roof is the usual choice for an enclosed garage because it sheds snow, rain and leaves best and stands up to more weather. Framing is 14-gauge steel tubing as standard, with 12-gauge as an upgrade. A certified building comes with engineered drawings for your county's wind and snow loads, which most building departments require for an enclosed garage.

Concrete Slab And Anchors

Most enclosed metal garages go on a concrete slab, with concrete anchors around the base. Build the slab to the frame size your builder gives you, square and level, and confirm whether the quote lists frame or roof length before you pour. Ask your builder for the slab specifications they need.

Do You Need A Permit For A Metal Garage?

In most places, yes. Nearly every garage is larger than the 120- or 200-square-foot small-structure exemptions some codes use, and enclosed buildings get more scrutiny than open carports. Check permits, setbacks and required wind and snow ratings with your local building department before you order.

Metal Garage Prices By Size

In one 2026 published price guide, installed metal garages started at $9,786 for a 24x24, $11,817 for a 24x30 and $15,401 for a 30x40, with a 30x50 at about $24,300. Builder price sheets can start lower when doors and windows are left off. In our October 2026 check, one 20x20 enclosed vertical-roof garage with 9-foot legs was listed from $4,750 installed, with doors and windows extra.

The biggest price drivers are leg height, the number and size of doors, 12-gauge framing, certification, insulation, and your delivery zone.

Carport Or Garage?

An open carport costs far less than an enclosed garage of the same size, and many buyers start with a carport and enclose it later. If you might, tell your builder when you order so the frame is braced and certified for walls. Compare sizes in the carport sizes guide, or see the 24x30 carport and 20x20 carport guides.
